NOTICE OF RACE/SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Ritchie Regatta and Fall Series 2023 

1.      RULES

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in most current The Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024, US Sailing Prescriptions, and applicable class rules, with the exception that non-class practice sails are permissible provided they meet class measurements.    

 

2.      ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
     2.1 Series

The series is open to members of Cooper River Yacht Club.  The series is open to the following classes:  Laser-Radial, Sunfish, Opti, GP-14, the Rear Commodore may approve other classes. Guests are welcome to race, but are excluded from series qualification.  Eligible skippers who race one more than half of the races scheduled minus those cancelled or abandoned by the club or race committee will qualify for the series. Note: Scheduled to be 14 races to qualify (27 minus races cancelled for weather etc. divided by 2 rounded up to more than half the number of races sailed for the series)
2.2 Ritchie Regatta 
The Regatta is open to members and guests of Cooper River Yacht Club. Classes are the same as the Series.


3.      FEES and OBLIGATIONS

3.1 Series
There are no fees for the Series, There is no race committee obligation.  However, racers may serve on the race committee if there are no non-racing volunteers.  Racers volunteering for RC will receive their average score for the series for that day this may be done a maximum of two times. Sailors wishing to receive RC credit shall notify the scorer. (please remind me!)
3.2 Ritchie Regatta
Non-Members must pay a $20 fee to cover registration and food for the regatta. Members have no additional fees or obligations.

 

4.     REGISTRATION

4.1 Series
All competitors must register prior to their first Series appearance of the year racing. Community Sailing skippers shall also verify their sail number with the Race Committee each weekend. 
Boats failing to register will not receive a series score.

Prior to racing, if necessary, skippers shall check in with the race committee and shall make necessary changes to class of boat and sail number prior to the start of the first race, each race day.

by emailing the Race Officer at craigp@mac.com or if needed by simply giving your name and sail number to the Race Committee on duty and letting them know it's your first sail of the series. 
4.2 Ritchie Regatta
For Non-Members only, In addition to registering as noted in 4.1, you must also register and pay on the event page:

5.      FLEET START ELIGIBILITY

 Any eligible one-design fleets with two or more boats in the starting area at the posted start time shall be eligible to have a start. If only one boat is present, her crew may assist in Race Committee Duties to receive average points for series. 

 

6.      SCHEDULE

Regular Fleet Days are Scheduled for 3 races per day. A brief 2-minute break after the last boat in the fleet finished between races should be provided to allow racers to recover and make necessary adjustments. No Start after 3pm on series dates. 

Racing days and start times are as follows:

                        Sunday, September 3rd Ritchie Regatta Day 1 1 pm                   

                       Monday, September 4th    Ritchie Regatta Day 2     11am
 Sunday, September 10th 1 pm

                        Sunday, September 17th 1 pm

Sunday, September 24th 1 pm

Sunday, October 1st pm
Sunday, October 8th 1 pm
Sunday, October 15th 1 pm
Sunday, October 22nd 1 pm

7.    TIME LIMIT 

The time limit for a race is 40 minutes. If no boat finishes in this time the race is abandoned. 
At the discretion of the Race Committee boats that are substantially behind, with their positions
unlikely to change, may be finished in place in order to expedite racing if the boat when in proximity
to the clubhouse she shall be hailed by the RC to let them know.


8.    THE COURSES     

8.1 Marks
All marks are to be taken to port. The race committee will post the course on the course board on the roof.  A number indicating the first mark to be rounded designates the course.

Club turning marks will be orange balls. Exact location of marks may change to shorten or lengthen the course. The Race Committee should actively adjust this length for conditions.

Other drop mark courses (orange or white ball) may be used at the discretion of the race committee; such courses will be defined at the skippers meeting, or orally on the water.
8.2 Start/Finish
The starting line runs between the white pin mark on the north side of the river to the identical white mark on the south side of the river nearest the clubhouse. This same line serves as the finish line

 
Order of Marks:
Course 1: Marks 1, 2, finish Course 2: Marks 2,1, finish

9.      SCORING

9.1 Series
The scoring system shall be a Low-Point Averaged System, the series score for each boat will be the sum of her race scores divided by the number of races for which she is scored, excluding any throw outs which are earned by sailing more than the required races. The qualified boat with the lowest series score is the winner, and others are ranked accordingly. Boats that do not physically start will not be scored for that race. (Boats that start and do not finish will receive DNF but race would still count as races sailed towards qualifying) 
A minimum of 11 races sailed shall constitute a series. 
9.2 Ritchie Regatta
The two day regatta will be scored separately using Appendix A, Low-Point system.  If 6 races are completed across the two day regatta, one drop will be permitted for each boat's scores. 

The Fall Series, and the Ritchie Regatta will count towards the Club Fleet Championships

 

10.      AWARDS

10.1 Series
Awards will be given out for the 
Series. Only members qualify for series trophies; Fleets with 5 or more qualifiers will have trophies for first, second, and third place.   Fleets with fewer than 5 participating boats will have a first-place trophy, only.  Each Opti’s placement will be recognized with a trophy or a ribbon.
10.2 Ritchie Regatta
All entrants are eligible for awards. Top 3 places in each fleet will be awarded.

  

11.    DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. The organizing authority shall not accept any liability for property damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during, and/or after the racing.

12.    SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Changes to this NOR or specific Sailing Instructions may be posted on the official bulletin board one hour prior to the start of the days racing where they take effect, or earlier via club email/webpage.
